Review: Heavy Heavy – “Wait Where’s My… Oh There It Is EP” (2020)

Published:

Berlin’s Heavy Heavy formed in early 2019 by members, who originate from the Ukraine, Finland, and the United States.  They`ve just released a four track EP entitled “Wait Where’s My… Oh There It Is” which follows three previously released singles this year. The band Chance (vocals & bass), Valerij (guitars) and Linus (drums) cover topics ranging from tyrannical authorities to social apathy.

This extended play opens with `Pretty Ghost` which has some interesting guitar riffs, tense anxious vocals that seem to relate a tale of a really unhealthy relationship that can`t be shaken off. There`s a sort of grungy feel about this track but ends on a more melodic feel with some oohs and aaahs. We have a much faster paced number with `Badge Bruiser` which is bass driven with lyrics sung in Swedish and English strangely. It has a sort of belligerent feel with some intricate guitar chords and heads into an instrumental stoner groove come jam for the last minute or so.

`High Rise Vultures` is a strange one. A sort of spoken word composition with some evocative haunting guitar riffs that drift along. At times it slips into a heavy all out metal assault which keeps you wondering what`s next. We enjoy some heavy riffs and thumping drums on `Red Canvas` with the vocals at times melodic and at others more screeching bleeding into the powerful musical cacophony. A quite edgy almost unnerving but thoroughly enjoyable offering.

There was much to enjoy with Heavy Heavy`s debut EP. The lyrics were a little far out, but I did enjoy the varying styles of music that seemed to be influenced by bands like Stone Temple Pilots, Bush, and early Sabbath. Their full album will be one to look forward to.
