Last year they were the monster men, now its a monster of an EP

On the cover of this five track EP from the best rock n roll band in France (indeed this reviewer will probably get thrown out of the rock club for admitting that he might actually prefer them to Gojira, making them the best band in France full stop) Flayed display the legend “rock or die”.

As a maxim to live by it ain’t a bad one, and rock is what they do. Nothing more nothing less.

They proved this on last year’s brilliant “Monster Man” record, now they are back with an EP just because they can, and frankly wanted to share these songs with the world.

Those that loved “…Man” and if you didn’t go back and listen to it until you realise it is wonderful, will find much love here too.

Nothing strays too far from the successful path, it just rocks, riffs, rolls and overlays it with big old swathes of Deep Purple style organ. The title track does have a mighty angry streak “world of many days, and I’m depressed how many assholes were born today” is a fine line and it’s a fine song.

In truth there are four more where that came from too, “Trend Is Over” adds a boogie and clever female vocals and as always with Flayed the chorus and hook is the king of things, “Shoot The Trail” is kinda funky and its hip shaking intent is infectious, while “Rollin’ Monkey” packs more fun and hedonism into its bluesy three minutes five seconds than you’d get on night out with Keith Richards (maybe….).

In between there’s the collection’s one cover. To be honest, speaking entirely personally, “Fortunate Son” by Credence Clearwater Revival is one of MV’s favourite songs and a bad version could have lost marks. In the event Flayed and MV are still friends as they do it the justice it deserves.

So, it might not sell XI Million – that it deserves to is a different matter, but Flayed have done it again and released a real gem.
