Brock Geiger is a musical chameleon and over the last decade he has established himself as a mainstay on the Canadian scene and beyond as a collaborator on nearly fifty records and has toured world-wide with a long list of artists. He releases his debut album `Some Nights` this month.
`Pressure on a Pink Line` is a brief hazy instrumental that leads us into the album which really begins with `Steps Taken` which I read deals with the delicate nature of relationships and the complexity of trust capturing the essence of losing oneself and finding renewal by introspection. A meditative offering with an angular guiding drum beat, electronic nuances, skewed guitar riffs and tender vocals.
Title track `Some Nights` has a more robust edge and feels fairly detached and at times dreamy but has a kind of disco like texture whereas there`s a contemplative balled like feel to `Say Enough`
`After Later` is a reflection on “the nonlinear nature of understanding ourselves and our experiences” and is a fairly introspective piece with cello hues while `Evidence` has deep electronic tones and echoey reverberating vocals.
`Lemonade` has an enticing percussive beat and appears to be a mistrust or concern in a relationship and accepting the inevitability of this situation. Recognition of uncertainty while dealing with personal struggles permeates `Early August Rain` which is quite spellbinding although blurry and surreal in equal measure.
`October is Monochrome` is quite mesmerising and predominantly instrumental with fleeting vocals that are almost obscure and enigmatic. The final cut `Acquiescence` maybe an acknowledgement of a situation and is saturated with jazz like textures.
Brock acquired the alliance of musicians and artists such as Clea Anaïs, Matt Chamberlain, Kane Ritchotte, Sam Gendel, Gabe Noel and Kaelen Ohm to bring his vision to life. `Some Nights` seems as if it was pretty cathartic and healing for the singer-songwriter and musician. An at times hypnotic, absorbing, rhythmic and experimental offering and a release that will convey further insights the more you return to listen to it.
