If you’ve written records like “How Can We Be Lovers” by Michael Bolton, “I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing” and “If I Could Turn Back Time”, the chances are you can sit on your arse all day polishing your gold discs and counting your royalties.
Not Diane Warren. She’s still writing songs like the first single from this second EP of 2024 from Blanco Brown. Typical of what he does, smooth, soulful, perfect summer pop.
He’s got the perfect voice for the music he plays too, and that’s evident as soon as “Bad Man” continues the Blanco Brown stock in trade. That is to say, he mixes country and dance music better than anyone else does.
He’s extremely good at it too. “One Day” “Less” treads the type of lyrical path that has been done before in various forms, but it’s done so well that you can’t resist it, however hard you try.
And the fact that “You’re Incredible” is so joyous is perhaps understandable when you consider that Brown was left in intensive care by a drunk driver. When he recovered, he vowed to treat every day as a blessing (as well as working with drink-driving charities).
That warmth and empathy are what make this EP (rather like “Heartache and Lemonade” from earlier this year) so appealing.
He’s doing something slightly different; he’s original and authentic, and the sky’s the limit for Blanco Brown.
