REVIEW: BIG BOY BLOATER AND THE LIMITS – LUXURY HOBO (2016)

Bernard runs the rule of Big Boy’s new one

I like electric blues music a lot but not the ‘my baby done left me and my dog done died’ type. I like it to be a bit less generic and it must have authenticity. For me the American bands manage this best but there are plenty of UK artists (and others from mainland Europe) who have really upped their game in the past year or two and are delivering great music. The latest of these to step back to the plate is Big Boy Bloater.

With his band ‘The Limits’ in tow, this nine track album is his first for Mascot Music. This in itself gives the release a mark of quality and I’m pleased to say it doesn’t disappoint. The album is more of an R’n’B album rather than straightforward blues and I could imagine Jimmy Vaughn era Fabulous Thunderbirds playing any of these songs. ‘Devils Not Angles’ opens the album in grand style before leading into ‘It Came From The Swamp’.

This is a great song and comes with a cool Lego Man video, which can be found on the Band’s website. There are no weak tracks, with ‘Luxury Hobo Blues’ and ‘Not Cool Man’ being other notable stand-outs. Every track features plenty of tasty guitar work and the whole thing is well recorded and well played. Big Boy will be on tour soon and I would imagine these songs will sound even better in a live setting.

8/10
