Beau McCarthy (vocals guitar), Jack Purbrick (drums) Sam Brown (lead guitar), and Paul Fiscella (bass) make up BEACH BØNES who are a high energy punk rock quartet from London who have a mission to play the loudest, wildest punk shows possible and take their inspiration from bands such as Bad Nerves, Teen Mortgage, FIDLAR and The Hives. They`ve released a few singles up to now, entitled `Self Esteem`, `Bliss`, `Personality Crisis` and `Bad Blood` but release their debut five track EP `Reckless` this month.
`Best Friend` leads us in and we are taken on a pretty hurried one hundred second ride through what seems to be the fluctuations of a relationship with your bosom buddy which is kind of mirrored in the accompanying soundtrack. There`s a similar vibe to `Reckless` which is a tale of the narrator`s rash deeds and impulsiveness.
`Teens & Scenes` is initially much brasher and shouty with a real sense of angst about it and kinda reflects that difficult adolescent transitional developmental stage between childhood and adulthood. It does mellow out slightly and becomes more reflective as it evolves and for me, I thought it had a sense of early Foo Fighters about it. The wonderfully titled `Me, Myself & Jimmy Iovine` may be a play on the title of the slapstick black comedy film `Me, Myself & Irene` or the rapper G-Eazy and Bebe Rexha song `Me, Myself & I` but not quite getting the lyrics it could be about something completely different and just namechecks the American entrepreneur, former record executive, and media proprietor. It does appear to be a slightly melodic and melancholic reflection on being a little out of sorts with life.
The final cut ` I Wanna Die` is a heads down no nonsense slice of despondency and hopelessness set against an enticing pounding thumping foot tapping tune.
I really enjoyed this five tracker from BEACH BØNES which is a real taster of what these Londoners have to offer. It runs around the twelve minute mark so why not be as the title suggests `Reckless` hit the repeat and give it a few whirls as I can assure you it`ll brighten up a gloomy day.
