Review: APRE – “Always In My Head” (2020)

Published:

APRE are an English alternative pop duo formed in Kent in 2018, comprising two members Charlie Brown, and Jules Konieczny. They met at Ealing Chess Club, where the owner used to let them use the backroom to rehearse and record music and they both studied BA Creative Musicianship at The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance in London. The boys have released a few extended plays and now release a, what they call mini album with “Always In My Head”

This album kicks off with `Bad Boys` and it`s an upbeat joyous slice of pop, an interesting soundscape and almost cinematic at times. A song that has a message of hope is shared with

`I Know I’ll Find It` and it`s quite anthemic with finger clicks that will have you almost joining in.

A very uplifting composition that had some delightful strings throughout and especially towards the end. It had a really mesmerising feel at times.

`Without Your Love` was so infectious and had some clever lyrics that stayed with me long after I stopped listening to it with “ I don’t think I need this, I don’t think I like this” and a chorus of “without your love, we`re miles apart, so go take your love and leave me in the dark” that had me repeating it for the rest of the day. I found this number absolutely irresistible and was impressed with how the words were almost rapped as they were offered up so quickly. There seemed to be a reaffirmation of faithfulness with `Hello` which is quite catchy as it runs along at quite a pace.
`Live It Up` is a real pop outing with a positive message, seemingly being that you can be what you want to be. Another enjoyable and memorable track. There was a slower pace to `Always In My Head` which had some sumptuous synths and soaring vocals that again was another pleasing piece.

`Is That Really What You Live For?` had a wonderful hi energy texture about it and I could see this being a real danceable favourite in a live setting. The album closes out with the emotive `Grab My Hand` another quite up-tempo number that has a quite hypnotic feel.

APRE are a band that wouldn`t normally be on my radar but as the name seemed familiar, I thought I’d give them a quick listen and I have to say I`m so glad I did. “Always In My Head” runs at just under thirty minutes and has been put out as the fellas are unable to tour at present.

It seems that their debut album will follow in the new year. APRE offer intelligent alternative pop with delightful vocals, discerning lyrics, shimmering synths, and fervent guitar chords. A new album due next year but the appetiser of “Always In My Head” will certainly do for me until then.
