All-star power-pop rockers announce new single ‘Neon Madonna’, out March 23rd, second album ‘Brand New Brand’, out April 30th, and play the UK premiere of Nick Hall’s Joe Strummer documentary ‘I Need A Dodge!’ at Koko on March 25th

All-star power pop rock act The Crunch are getting set for an explosive start to 2015, with the announcement of a new single, new album and new member.

Featuring four rock and punk icons, in the shape of frontman Sulo Karlsson (Diamond Dogs), guitarist Mick Geggus (Cockney Rejects), bassist Dave Tregunna (Sham 69 / Lords of the New Church) and drummer Terry Chimes (The Clash), The Crunch formed out of a casual jam session at the end of 2012.  None of the members had planned to embark on a new project at that time, however the torrent of creative energy unleashed in that initial session swiftly persuaded them otherwise, providing fuel for a prolific first two years together.  In 2013, they released the aptly titled debut album ‘Busy Making Noise’, which showcased the skills of a group capable of mixing true punk grit with immense, infectious pop hooks, and able to boast both the experience of seasoned scene stalwarts, and the irresistible exuberance of young upstarts.

Since then, the band have remained busy writing and recording new material, and will share the fruits of their labours on April 30th, when their second album is released via Cargo Records, as a LP, CD and download. Titled ‘Brand New Brand’, it sees the band expanded to a five-piece, with regular live collaborator Idde Schultz now lending her sultry backing vocals and lush keyboard melodies to The Crunch full-time.  The release is being partly funded by a PledgeMusic campaign, which runs until April 9th at www.pledgemusic.com/projects/thecrunchbrandnewbrand, where fans can access exclusive tracks and content, and Pledge for a host of Crunch goodies, ranging from signed CDs and LPs, to hand-written lyrics, original artwork and Skype time with the band.

The new album and line-up are to be formerly introduced by lead single ‘Neon Madonna’, another gloriously catchy three minute blast of power pop, out as a download on March 23rd. Building from a sunny rock steady rhythm, which showcases Terry’s precise beats at their very best, the song swells into an dramatic, anthemic chorus, where Idde’s backing vocals bring a fresh richness and depth to The Crunch sound. Sulo comments “The lyrics are about mankind’s endless endeavour for something to believe in, and to suppress mortality”.  In a nod to guitarist Mick Geggus’ roots with Oi! icons The Cockney Rejects, the accompanying promo video was shot around Canning Town and at local venue The Bridgehouse 2 – the original Bridgehouse having of course being the setting for the Rejects now legendary first gig in 1979.

In the week of the single’s release, The Crunch will also pay tribute to drummer Terry Chimes’ old bandmate Joe Strummer, when they perform at the UK premiere of Nick Hall’s new documentary ‘I Need A Dodge! Joe Strummer On The Run’, which tells the story of Strummer’s self-imposed exile in Granada during the mid-80s, after the implosion of The Clash mark two.  The event at London’s Koko on March 25th will also feature an all-star band performing Strummer and Clash numbers, with some very special guest vocalists to be announced.
