Drive-By Truckers co-founder Patterson Hood, who released his landmark solo album ‘Exploding Trees & Airplane Screams‘ earlier this year, has shared new track ‘Scott’s Sister‘ today. The song arrives ahead of his upcoming UK tour, which includes a headline show at London’s Union Chapel.

Patterson explains: “Scott’s Sister was the first song I wrote for what became my Exploding Trees & Airplane Screams album. Part of a vein of songs I often refer to as The Family Mythology, songs exploring stories, dynamics, and tall tales involving my family through the years. My mom and her brother have had an often contentious relationship through the years. I consider it a sweet song, actually one of the sweetest I’ve ever written”.
He adds: “I recorded the basic track for it by myself at The Panthera, s studio in Portland. We later added Nate Query (Decemberists) on upright bass, which he knocked out of the park in a single take. Then the wonderful Kyleen King added viola, violin and backing vocals. It’s one of my favorite tracks from the sessions that produced the album. I’m thrilled to have it finally see the light of day”.

A scenic lyric video for the song was created from aerial footage of Hood’s hometown of Florence, AL and surrounding areas. The footage was provided by local pilot John David Apkarian of Wings Over Bama, and underscores the honesty and potency of Patterson’s lyrics.

Hood’s fourth solo album and first in over 12 years, Exploding Trees & Airplane Screams sees the veteran singer, guitarist, and songwriter exploring his youth and young manhood in a collection unlike anything in his ever-evolving catalogue. It is inspired in part by his own short story, “The Exploding Trees,” in which Hood tells the tale of a natural disaster that occurred in his North Alabama hometown just as he turned 30 and relocated to Athens, GA where Drive-By Truckers were co-founded in 1996.
Produced by Chris Funk (The Decemberists, Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks) at various studios in Hood’s current hometown of Portland, OR, ‘Exploding Trees & Airplane Screams’ marks the singer-songwriter-guitarist’s most expansive and ambitious extracurricular effort to date, supported by a stellar cast of friends and fellow musicians including Wednesday, Brad Morgan and Jay Gonzalez (Drive-By Truckers), Steve Berlin (Los Lobos, The Blasters), David Barbe (Sugar, Mercyland), Nate Query (The Decemberists), Steve Drizos (Jerry Joseph and The Jackmormons), Daniel Hunt (Neko Case, M Ward), and Stuart Bogie (The Hold Steady, Goose). Hood’s fourth solo album and first in over 12 years, the collection includes such recently premiered singles as “A Werewolf and a Girl (w/Lydia Loveless)” and “The Pool House,” the latter accompanied by an official music video featuring stop-motion animation from Athens, GA-based artist Frances Thrasher (aka Heaven4TheYoung), who also painted the album’s striking cover.
