Maintaining the momentum of a hugely successful 2018, singer-songwriter Judith Owen opens the new year with a video for her cover of ‘Dream A Little Dream Of Me’, taken from the critically acclaimed 2018 record ‘rediSCOVERed’,
The video is a striking piece of visual storytelling, exhibiting something that Judith describes as “a reality kept behind closed doors.”Working with director Nick Leopold (who also directed ‘Hotline Bling’), Judith has taken the central role in a disturbing fictional tale that for some, is a reality. “It’s the cycle of abuse, the devil you know, made all the more poignant by the beauty and tenderness of the contrasting music and lyrics.” Explains Judith, “The relationship shown is an abusive one and sadly shows the pattern of the abused who tolerates violence, by making excuses and taking the blame.”
Whilst Judith chose a rather heart-wrenching story for the visual side, her personal connection to the music is a much lighter affair,“Truly one of the most beautiful songs from the great American songbook, my version of “Dream” started as a gift to 2 friends on their wedding day. I recorded the “we’re so in love we don’t want the night to end” version first, and then recorded this much more personal version, when I remember not wanting the night to end because I knew I’d never see him again!”
2018 was a monumental year for Judith; she released the internationally acclaimed covers album ‘rediSCOVERed’ in May (landing her a second consecutive spot on Sunday Times Culture’s best 100 albums of the year following ‘Sombody’s Child’ in 2016), played sold out gigs across the globe (including the 5 star Ronnie Scott’s gig in September), and performed her annual ‘Christmas Without Tears’ special featuring her husband Harry Shearer and a host of special guests from across comedy and entertainment. Other notable appreciation for ‘reDISCOVERed’ has been shown from the likes of Rolling Stone France, Rolling Stone Sweden, People Magazine USA, BBC London, Jazz FM, The Telegraph, Record Collector and from Jazz fans across America as the record reached the Top 100 Jazz Airplay after only 4 weeks of release.
