Ahead of her UK headline tour starting this Thursday (Oct 1st), South Carolina-born singer, songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist and visual artist Hannah Wicklund has released her new single ‘Marionettes’.
It is the latest song to be taken from her critically acclaimed new album War On Women; Calling All Good Men. It is available to purchase now on CD, vinyl and digital download via Strawberry Moon Records here. As for the corporate streaming giants, they are receiving one track in track list order over the course of one year, as Hannah puts the power back into the hands of artists and music fans.
‘Marionettes’ is a powerful feminist anthem and expansive blues rocker driven by Hannah’s propulsive riffs and grand piano playing, while bolstered by a passionate chorus rich in harmonies. Her lyrics analyse the historical injustice surrounding women and the conflicting societal views still seen throughout the world today.
Regarding the single Hannah says, “‘Marionettes’ is written for the black sheep of the family. It’s for the soul that questions the systems that deny us feminine wisdom and who cannot withstand a curious mind. May we each challenge our beliefs enough to make sure they’re really ours…”
War On Women; Calling All Good Men is a monster of an album that’s both beauty and the beast. Its 13 sublime, scorching songs are at once a warning and a winner’s lap, conjured from hell and from the heart. It is Hannah’s first album since breaking free from an industry which conspired to keep her quiet.
‘Marionettes’ follows the stupendously sleazy ‘Evil Is A Corporation’ which continues to pull no punches, taking aim at the deception, collusion, broken promises and dodgy contracts which has led to the creation of War On Women; Calling All Good Men.
War On Women; Calling All Good Men follows 2024’s widely-acclaimed The Prize – named Rolling Stone Brazil’s #1 Rock Album of the Year among a wealth of further praise. It should have sent Hannah supernova, instead, it marked a years-long battle to retain her rights.
Her response is a record that’s a call-to-arms for change. A gutsy, gripping, rollercoaster ride that ratchets up the drama, shakes with rage and basks in beauty as it shimmies through rock, soul, blues, folk, gospel and pop. It takes in a tale of heartbreak in strange circumstances, lays bare the obstacles Hannah overcame to take back control of her career, and offers hope for the future.
In tandem with the single releases, Hannah has developed The Strawberry Moon Tribune, a beautiful independent arts and culture magazine of which she is Editor-In-Chief. The Strawberry Moon Tribune follows a similar release pattern. Each publication follows the themes of a relating single on the album, as she brings together a host of creatives and experts in the field to contribute to its pages. War On Women; Calling All Good Men and The Strawberry Moon Tribune will be available to purchase at all forthcoming Hannah Wicklund shows. Her 12-date UK headline tour starts this Thursday (October 1st) at Birmingham Institute 2, finishing at Grimsby Yardbirds on October 22nd.
Hannah will follow the UK shows with a 10-date co-headline USA tour with Turning Jane starting on October 28th at The Southgate House Revival in Newport, finishing at The Inn, Long Beach on November 13th.
