MOMMA SAY, IT’S A KNOCKOUT

Published:

Momma, the Brooklyn-based band led by singers/guitarists Allegra Weingarten and Etta Friedman, today announce their debut UK shows and release their anthemic new single “Rockstar”, another slice of infectiously poppy grunge that again marks the band out as one of this year’s most undoubtedly exciting prospects.

Its accompanying must-watch video – directed by LA-based duo Batshit! (filmmakers Ben Joyner & Henry Drayton) – is pure fun, brimming with unbridled energy as it pays tongue-in-cheek tribute to Friedman and Weingarten’s rock music comedy favourites like Josie and the PussycatsSchool of Rock and Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny.

“Etta and I wanted to write a song about making it big, and becoming rock stars. We didn’t want to take anything too seriously, lyrically, or musically. We just wanted the song to sound big,” says Weingarten. “We thought it would be cool to have our own little rockumentary condensed in a 3-minute music video. It’s also kind of like a manifestation – I think we shamelessly want all of these things to happen in our careers.” “Rockstar” is the band’s latest single following November’s dynamic, energizing “Medicine,” their first for new label home Lucky Number.

Produced and mixed by bassist Aron Kobayashi Ritch, these two songs mark Friedman & Weingarten’s first tracks written and recorded in the band’s new hometown of Brooklyn, New York.

“Medicine” earned significant praise and support upon release from Rolling Stone, The FADER (20 Best Rock Songs Right Now), The Line Of Best Fit, NME, Stereogum, Gigwise, Brooklyn Vegan, Consequence (Best Songs of the Week), NPR Music and many more. Their critically acclaimed 2020 LP Two of Me—a determined concept album situated in an imagined purgatory called The Bug House—heralded Momma as stars in the making, with coverage via Rolling Stone (Artist You Need to Know), Pigeons & Planes (Best New Artists), NPR Music, V MagazineLA Weekly, The FADER,  Pitchfork (Selects Playlist), The AV Club, Paste, NYLON, Alternative Press, Under the Radar, and more.

Momma have also announced their much-anticipated first UK dates, the band will be headlining London’s Brixton Windmill on Tuesday 10th May and Manchester’s Yes on Saturday 14th May and open for Illuminati Hotties in
Leeds on Friday 6th May. The band will also be supporting both Wet Leg and
Snail Mail on a series of US dates and will be announcing additional UK shows alongside further news on their upcoming album, soon.
