Love Is Noise have never been interested in standing still.Since the release of their breakthrough debut album To Live In A Different Way, the UK band have transformed from one of alternative music’s most exciting emerging names into a genuinely formidable force – building a fiercely devoted audience, taking their atmospheric, emotionally charged heaviness to increasingly bigger stages and establishing a sound that refuses to sit comfortably inside any one genre.Now, they’re ready to take that evolution somewhere darker.Love Is Noise announces “The Space Between Happiness And Heartache.”, a brand-new concept EP that represents the band’s boldest creative statement yet – and the first project they have produced themselves entirely.Built around an unnamed character who constructs an artificial world as a way of escaping the reality of how they truly feel, the EP explores depression, anxiety, isolation, and low self-worth through a world where nothing is quite what it seems.But this isn’t simply a record about darkness. It’s about the increasingly complicated ways we hide it.“The more we wrote this record, the more we realised it wasn’t really about one person’s story — it’s about how people create versions of themselves just to get through modern life,” explains vocalist Cameron Humphrey. “We wanted to make something that felt real. Not polished to the point where it loses its humanity, but honest about the things that people don’t always want to talk about.”“The character has built this entire world to escape how they actually feel, but we never tell you exactly why. That’s really important to us. We don’t want to give the listener a beginning, middle, and end and tell them what it means. We want people to find themselves somewhere inside it.”‘Smile”, the first track to be released from the EP, also features vocals from Casper Frisk of PALESKIN. Speaking on the track, Cam says, “ Smile is a pursuit of happiness. An anthem for the lovers. A celebration of those who put others first. Sonically, “The Space Between Happiness And Heartache.” pushes Love Is Noise further than they have ever gone. It’s heavier. More experimental. More cinematic. More emotionally exposed. And, for the first time, it’s completely theirs.
Cam Humphrey and guitarist Alex Ioannou co-produced the EP, with Cam performing all of the drums, while Sam Clark and Alex performed guitar and bass across the project. Alex also takes a much bigger role vocally, adding another dimension to the band’s sound.
For a band who have spent the time since ‘To Live In A Different Way ‘ continually expanding their sonic world, the EP feels less like a departure and more like the culmination of everything that has come before. “When we look back at ‘To Live In A Different Way’, we can hear where we were trying to get to,” says Cam. “This feels like we’ve finally stopped worrying about what Love Is Noise is supposed to sound like. We had the confidence to do everything ourselves this time. Alex and I produced it, I played all the drums, Sam and Alex are properly embedded in the guitars and bass, and Alex has a much bigger vocal presence. It feels like the three of us are completely inside this record.”
The EP’s visual world is equally ambitious. Drawing inspiration from The Truman Show, The Matrix, Dark City and Batman: The Animated Series, Love Is Noise have created a universe of dark deco, artificial realities and beautiful decay – a world that looks seductive from the outside but becomes increasingly unsettling the deeper you go.
And in a world where so much creative imagery is increasingly generated by machines, the band have deliberately gone in the opposite direction. The artwork has been entirely hand-drawn by artist @msudrawings, with no AI used anywhere in the project. Sam has also created the EP’s website, extending the narrative beyond the music and allowing the world of “The Space Between Happiness And Heartache.” to exist beyond the record itself.
“Everything about this project had to feel human,” says Cam. “There’s so much AI-generated stuff everywhere now, and we didn’t want to contribute to that. The artwork is made by an actual artist. Sam built the website. We produced the music ourselves. Every part of it comes from people who are actually in the band. That’s kind of the irony of the whole EP. It’s about someone creating a fake world because they can’t deal with reality, while we’re making something as real as we possibly can.”
That tension – between the real and the artificial, happiness and heartache, escape and confrontation – sits at the heart of the record. It feels like the perfect next step for a band that refuses to be defined by where they started.
