“We both played the game, got married, you kept your name,
we thought we were wiser than our mum and dads,
turns out we’re just the same, shitty compromisers /
Girl we’re only getting older, all the wood that we collect and all the fires we keep, how come it’s getting colder /
I only want it with you girl”
– ‘King of California’
Following up on the repentant grooves of ‘So Sorry‘, John Butler, one of Australia’s leading independent artists, today announces the release of new track ‘King of California‘.
The third track from his new studio album ‘PRISM‘ (released 5th September), ‘King of California‘ delves directly into the heart of Butler’s 25-year partnership with his muse and collaborator Mama Kin, charting the ebb and flow of a quarter century of love, growth and challenges.
“My partner and I have been on a pretty big ride together, constantly evolving and working out what it means to be life partners,” Butler reflects. “With every new phase of living comes a new season of self-reflection and reassessment. We’re here to ground and uplift each other, never to minimise or restrict.”
Butler’s deft musicality continues to evolve with ‘PRISM’, the third chapter in his ambitious Four Season series that began with the meditative Running River and the fully instrumental Still Searching.
Working with acclaimed producer James Ireland (POND, San Cisco), ‘PRISM’ sees Butler reclaim his signature groove-heavy sound, featuring fierce guitars, robust percussion, and meteoric choruses. His deeply personal storytelling is set against a wide sonic bandwidth, ranging from festival-feel singalongs and frenzied rock outs to soulful, existential balladry.
As a musical revolutionary, political activist and environmental warrior, John Butler is one of Australia’s most prolific independent artists, forging his own path to success without surrender to major labels, corporate sponsors, or moral compromise.
With his new band–featuring original JBT member Michael Barker on drums, Michael Boase on percussion and Ian Peres on Bass/ keys, Butler will be touring Europe from October 30, with good friend and fellow WA muso, Noah Dillon, along for the ride as special guest.
Tickets are on sale now from www.johnbutler.com.
