Whilst on tour from the UK, spending lockdown in Adelaide, South Australia, Gwyn Ashton wrote and recorded Get Outta Town, with the help from Guns N’ Roses Richard Fortus on lead guitar, Cold Chisel’s David Blight on harmonica and the Superjesus rhythm section of Stu Rudd and Travis Dragani.
Get Outta Town starts with Ashton’s monstrous Malcolm Young-type guitar riff, jumping straight into a classic four-on-the-floor good time rock n’ roll number with 4tus and Dave Blight trading licks, turning this anti war song into an epic Aussie rock anthem to blast out of your car stereo, just like in the good ol’ days!
This project started off as a song to help record a track with a friend of Ashton’s who had been commissioned to write some music for a set of lyrics that had been penned by the late Bon Scott in 1973, prior to his role as AC/DC frontman.
Ashton looked at the lyrics and wrote a guitar riff and melody to that song on the spot but was asked to stop by the label as he wasn’t supposed to be involved in that part of the process. Conflict had just broken out with Ukraine and Ashton decided to take his music he’d written and write a new set of lyrics to use as a protest song.
Now titled Get Outta Town, Ashton recorded the song with drummer Travis Dragani, bassist Stu Rudd, harmonica player David Blight, backing vocalist Andrea Dawson and sent off the backing track to Richard Fortus in Los Angeles who liked the song and agreed to record a solo for it.
