The intensely dark and foreboding track features the additional vocal talents of Discharge’s Jeff Janiak, who has been a long-time admirer of the band, and appears prominently in the promotional video.
“I’ve been a huge, huge Discharge fan since I was a teenager, I adore them,” states Filthydirty. “We were lucky enough to share a bill with them, and it turned out that vocalist JJ was an Evil Blizzard fan, which was obviously a buzz.
When we were writing the new album there was a track called ‘Four Letter Words’ that’s got a real Discharge vibe, and we toyed with the idea of seeing if JJ wanted to add vocals. But that seemed a bit too obvious a track, and we don’t like ‘obvious’ usually. So, we thought about seeing if he wanted to add something to another track that wasn’t as ‘Discharge’, as I know JJ has not only a wide musical taste but also varied vocal styles.
So, we sent him ‘Wake The Dead’ as a demo, and he was well on board. I went down and recorded his parts in Leek, and instead of the obvious screaming he added the pretty unsettling whispering parts. And some screaming, of course. JJ added musical ideas to the track and also brought a lot to the table – literally – for the video, which was all filmed and edited on my phone. Full on lo-fi. As you can no doubt tell.
So now we’ll have to sort some gigs out together so we can do the track live!”
