Born in central England but based in Dublin since the mid-’90s, Duncan Maitland is a singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer and engineer known for his melodious, soft psych songwriting. ‘Dummy’ is the dazzling introductory single from his long-awaited second album, ‘Chamberling’, due for release in late October.
“This is a song for all the shadow artists and behind-the-scenesters who secretly harbour a violent desire to be out front and centre stage,” states Maitland. “It’s also a word of warning to all the complacent puppeteers – always keep your left hand informed of what your right hand is doing!” Even more cryptically, he adds that “perhaps it’s a message to the puppets themselves – try not to be a little shit!”
Maitland had relocated to Dublin after being invited to join the then successful Irish act Picturehouse as lead guitarist, touring extensively and also writing some of the band’s biggest hits on national radio, including ‘Sunburst’. He left in 1999 to work with Pugwash, playing guitar and keyboards on their first three albums and co-writing the 2005 song ‘Anchor’ with band founder Thomas Walsh (also of Duckworth Lewis Method) and Andy Partridge of XTC.
Maitland has subsequently spent two decades leading a three lane career as a producer/engineer, session musician and solo act, but often combinations of all three. Bookended by production and session work with XTC and Ger Eaton, including the latter’s well received 2025 album ‘Season Changes’, he issued a debut solo album in 2010 entitled ‘Lullabies For The 21st Century’ that Shindig! magazine described as a “radio-friendly take on forlorn, widescreen vintage pop that attracted admiring glances at every turn” in a recent feature that previewed ‘Chamberling’.
