Open ears and an open mind are the essences of singer, guitarist and songwriter Robert Cray, whose career spans from the roots of the blues to the pinnacles of rock, from the eighties to this moment. He grew up listening to the gospel of the Five Blind Boys of Mississippi, Bobby Bland’s soul, Jimi Hendrix’s rock guitar and the Beatles pop sounds.

2012s Nothin’ But Love was the 16th studio album by the veteran soul-bluesman and features Kevin Shirley (Joe Bonamassa, Beth Hart, Rush) on production duties. His soft-sweet vocals and recognizable playing yearn on stories about love and broken relationships alongside big-band swing and rock n roll. Song such as the nine-minute “I’m Done Crying” still sound spine-tinglingly classic but contemporary at the same time, whilst “Side Dish” still has that infectious, irresistible zip.

Initially released in 2014, In My Soul was produced by American multi-instrumentalist, composer, musical director, Grammy Award-winning artist and long-time Cray friend Steve Jordan (John Mayer, Keith Richards). In My Soul captures Cray at his finest with an outstanding ten-song collection of Staxx and Chess influenced soul and blues that showcases his trademark guitar playing and extraordinary vocals.

From the driving original classic Cray “You Move Me” with its scorching guitar leads, to the melodic 60’s sway of “Fine Yesterday” featuring Cray’s trademark soul-drenched vocals, In My Soul draws listeners in very quickly and features sublime covers of Otis Redding, Bobby Blue Bland and Isaac Hayes.

Inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame at 57, he is one of the youngest living legends to receive the prestigious honour. With over 12 million records sold and his line of Fender guitars, Cray has established himself as a genre-defining artist. Breaking through the pop ceiling with his gate-crashing/blues-edged trademark sound and distinct style has become a signature blend of r&b, pop, rock, soul, and traditional blues.

These two post-Millennium records remain essential listening amongst Cray’s formidable back catalogue.
