Matthew J. Tow, founder and frontman for The Lovetones, has had a music career as audacious and tumultuous as they come. Hailing from Australia, Tow began in Sydney where he developed his songwriting and recording technique with bands like Splash, Drop City and his more experimental solo project Colorsound. He also honed his live chops playing in opening spots for Brit pop giants The Stone Roses, Manic Street Preachers, Yo La Tengo and others. In 2003, Tow relocated to the States and joined the infamous Brian Jonestown Massacre as guitarist, contributing 2 songs to that band’s album …And This Is Our Music. But ever the restless nomad, Tow had another project in the works – The Lovetones, a more streamlined, melodic slice of indie-psych than BJM. It’s this project that has become Tow’s focus in recent years, and he has teamed with Los Angeles-based indie label Cleopatra Records to release the brand new Lovetones album Myriad on February 28.
As Tow explains, “The story goes on for The Lovetones and with every album a new story unfolds. The making of the new album found me at the crossroads and with each possible avenue laid out in front of me, so too a myriad of possible outcomes. I decided to tell this story now. A synthesis of all that unfolded in my life during the 10 years since Lost was released. A lot has changed but I think our distinctive sound still remains. I hope this record resonates with you as much as it has with me, leaving you inspired or at the very least with new perspectives and insights.
