Boom! Hit play on Slates’ new single ‘Hot Wings’ and you’re hit with the explosive sound of a band reborn. It’s a whirlwind of intensity, whipping up dynamic Tom Morello-style riffs, muscular, deep-funk grooves, bouncing, battering ram rhythms and the rabble-rousing riot of its insistent “GET UP! GET UP!” hook.
Vocalist Louis Barnes says, “‘Hot Wings’ is about realisation, driven by an ambition to make something of yourself. Its lyrics descend into a world of aggression and defiance, challenging the current young generation to get up and take control.”
Guitarist Joe Briggs adds, “We’ve pushed our rock, funk and nu-metal influences to the front, drawing inspiration from American bands such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beastie Boys and Rage Against The Machine. But we bring our own youthful, defiant edge to these influences, drawing on our northern English roots to cement a sound and a movement that’s our own.”
Slates have been detonating ‘Hot Wings’ all summer, causing crowd-surfing anarchy in front of a huge crowd at La Mercè festival in Barcelona and kicking-up a huge moshpits at Isle of Wight Festival, Truck and Y NOT?. Expect such scenes to be replicated and amplified deep into next summer’s season too, with the Rock N Roll Circus, The Godney Gathering and In It Together already confirmed – and much more to be revealed as 2027 is set to be a huge breakthrough year.
Produced by Ben Harper (The Mysterines, The Kairos) at The Motor Museum in Liverpool, ‘Hot Wings’ is no one-off, setting the tone for much more visceral new music to come. It’s the start of a new mission statement: unapologetic, rebellious, and completely unafraid to create and embrace chaos.
Formed on the outskirts of Leeds, Slates’ three founder members (the other being bassist Jude Wales) are all still just 21-years-old, while drummer Cohen Hall is 18. Recently signed to This Feeling Records in partnership with LAB Records, Slates are now primed to go global starting with ‘Hot Wings’ – their first release for the label.
