Weymouth alternative-rock trio Sadcult return on 17th July with ‘Outcry’, a towering burst of catharsis that transforms frustration into something euphoric.
Marrying the raw abrasion of ’90s grunge with the emotional pull of early-2000s alternative rock and flashes of pop-punk urgency, the band continue to carve out a sound that is equal parts crushing and uplifting.
Built on walls of distorted guitars, soaring hooks and emotionally unguarded songwriting, ‘Outcry’ lives in the tension between hope and heartbreak. It’s music that feels bruised yet defiant, where melody cuts through noise like sunlight breaking a storm. Sam Newland’s unmistakable, snarling vocal delivery recalls the aching intensity of Billy Corgan (The Smashing Pumpkins), while the band’s dynamic songwriting brings a barbed grit and driving sense of energy, balancing shimmering melodies with towering guitars and punching drums.
Sadcult have steadily built a loyal international following through songs that embrace vulnerability without sacrificing impact. Their signature “happy-sad” aesthetic has resonated far beyond their Dorset roots, a connection perhaps best demonstrated by fans from across the world coming together to create a collaborative lyric video for previous single, Low.
Speaking about the new single, the band says, “Outcry is one of those songs that is going to mean something different depending on who’s listening to it. But at its core, Outcry touches on the reality of growing up and witnessing certain illusions fade, dealing with that frustration, and coming to terms with the fact that life very rarely plays out the way that you imagined it would.
The track is saturated in angst and has a very punk attitude throughout, very heavily influenced by bands such as early Green Day and Nirvana being the driving force behind the sound and overall energy.
Outcry was mostly recorded at our small home studio, which gave us the freedom to really experiment and capture the energy we wanted, whilst having the drums recorded separately at Orchard Studios in Glastonbury by our mixing engineer Joe Marsh.”
Beyond the music itself, Sadcult have become instrumental in revitalising the original alternative music scene in their hometown of Weymouth. The trio have helped foster a new generation of local artists and audiences, helping to build a local scene in the area. Their recent sold-out, 150-capacity hometown headline show marked not only a milestone for the band, but a celebration of a grassroots scene they’ve helped build from the ground up.
That momentum has carried onto stages across the UK. Sadcult have performed at Duck & Dive Festival at Signature Brew in London, joined Canadian grunge outfit The Jins on multiple dates of their UK tour, and shared stages with Sick Joy and James and the Cold Gun.
