Peter Ulrich is best known for his work as drummer/percussionist for the legendary group Dead Can Dance, with whom he played from 1982-90 as they developed their unique fusion of neoclassical, world and folk music. Signed to the 4AD label, he also contributed to ‘Filigree & Shadow’, the second album by ‘in-house’ project This Mortal Coil, and also made cameo appearances on records by Wolfgang Press and Pieter Nooten & Michael Brook released on 4AD during this period.

Ulrich’s first solo recording was the 1990 AA-sided 12″ single featuring the songs ‘Taqaharu’s Leaving’ and ‘Evocation’, before a temporary cessation of recording activity due to family commitments that was punctuated with occasional sessions for Dead Can Dance.

His eventual debut solo album, ‘Pathways And Dawns’, saw him emerge as a writer of hauntingly beautiful melodies and deeply poetic lyrics. Largely recorded and produced by Brendan Perry of Dead Can Dance at his Quivvy Church studio in Ireland, it was packed with driving rhythms and meditative percussion patterns, as well as some delightfully inspired guitar work from Perry. The album was initially issued in 1999 on CD only by the US label Projekt.

Ulrich’s second album, ‘Enter The Mysterium’, followed in 2005 on the City Canyons label, while his song ‘The Scryer and the Shewstone’ was included on the first ‘Dark Folk Britannica’ compilation on Cold Spring (2007) and he and Perry both featured on the Piano Magic album ‘Ovations’ (2008).

Next came the birth of The Peter Ulrich Collaboration, a joint project with City Canyons owner and writer/arranger/producer Trebor Lloyd, together with a huge cast of guest musicians. This has spawned a trilogy of albums – ‘The Painted Caravan’ (2013), ‘Tempus Fugitives’ (2015) and ‘Final Reflections’ (2019).

Ulrich has also guested with the Greek neofolk group Daemonia Nymphe and the US post-punk cabaret duo Frenchy and the Punk, while 2020 has seen him contribute a new song for the final ‘Dark Folk Britannica’ compilation on Cold Spring and prepare the first ever vinyl edition of ‘Pathways And Dawns’.
