Edinburgh based, Welsh singer-songwriter Harry Harris has announced his new album ‘I Feel Drunk All The Time’ and shared first single ‘Marathon’. The follow up to his 2015 Telegraph Folk Album of the Year, ‘Songs About Other People‘ and 2017’s Andre the Giant EP, ‘I Feel Drunk All The Time’ will be released on June 21st 2019.
‘I Feel Drunk All The Time ‘is a shift from the Americana influenced storytelling of Harris’ previous work, towards a more personal, direct kind of song-writing. Born from the grief that followed after the death of his best friend, the songs are nevertheless tinged with hope, love, and joy. The album also includes co-writes with celebrated authors Caroline O’Donoghue and Ella Risbridger.
“I wanted to try and write about what I was feeling,” Harry says. “As I began to do that, it made sense that the writing needed to be in a plainer language that I’d used before. Grief was — is — a very strange, confronting process. Getting these songs down was a way of trying to understand and to acknowledge that, and not bury it.”
Musically, the album is a departure too. Following on from the lush, spacious, electronic sounds of The Andre the Giant EP, this record covers similar ground, with gorgeous electric guitars and wide, expansive soundscapes. It also features a host of incredible musicians – Robin Brill (The Honey Farm) on drums, Al Shields on bass, Pedro Cameron (Man of the Minch) on violin, Rosie Bans on keys, Angus Munro on saxophone, and Martha Ffion on backing vocals.
Vocally, Harry is unrestrained, rawer than he’s ever been, influenced by deeply emotive singers like Paul Buchanan, Julien Baker, and Adam Duritz: “The music I grew up listening to was emo, alt-country and alt-rock. Bands like Counting Crows, Rilo Kiley, Death Cab For Cutie, The Hold Steady. The vocals on these records move between whispers and shouts, build with the rest of the songs. They crack. I wanted to try and channel that when recording this album, to try and put as much of myself on the record as possible.”
Alongside the album announcement, Harris has shared the driving and anthemic ‘Marathon’ alongside a lyric video. ‘Marathon’ as with the majority of the album was written in the wake of the death of his best friend John, Harris explains the thought behind ‘Marathon’: “I wrote it about grief, but it’s about being thrown into the middle of a situation you’re not prepared for, and clamouring for some evidence that it will end, or at least you’ll get used to it.”
‘I Feel Drunk All The Time’ will be released June 21st.
