BAND OF THE DAY: SOUTH SUMMIT

Published:

Perth, Australia’s South Summit are pleased to share the video for their single ‘Catacombs’, which is out now and available to stream on all good digital services.

The band will be heading to our shores for a run of UK headline tour dates in May 2025, including an appearance at The Great Escape Festival in Brighton.

London and Manchester are now SOLD OUT with remaining tickets for other shows available from: https://www.southsummitband.com/

Commenting on the UK run, the band said: “We’re beyond excited to be returning to the UK for The Great Escape and a few of our own shows. It feels so special to have sold out our first headline shows in the UK – thank you so much to everyone who has bought a ticket, we’ll see you in a couple of weeks!”

With a deep, contagious groove and a confident, attitude-filled delivery from frontman Zaya Reuben, ‘Catacombs’ is one of the most danceable tracks in the band’s discography so far—a very deliberate move throughout the writing process, as the band pushed to find a listening experience their growing fan-base can move to.

Commenting on the track, guitarist/vocalist Nemo Reuben says: “In ‘Catacombs’ we really buckled down on finding the groove and focused heavily on bringing in sounds to create this Hip Hop/dance/funk track. Creating a piece of art where people can listen to the song and feel like they can express themselves, really ties in to the process of adding in synthesised effects combined with deep bass lines, groovy guitars and strong melodic elements. This track was pure from the start and it’s definitely a sound we’d love to keep exploring.”

Lyrically, the track delves into pain and trauma, and how we tend to bury that mentally. Although things may seem perfect on the outside, some memories will always stick with you, and ‘Catacombs’ are used as a metaphor for those memories.

“The main themes are coming of age and how we deal with certain aspects of pain,” adds vocalist Zaya Reuben. “‘Catacombs’ is a track that helped me delve deep within myself, so I hope others can too. The inspiration behind the track comes from certain experiences from my life. The catacombs are a dark place beneath a somewhat beautiful place. I feel that everyone has their own catacombs hidden within them. So, I wanted to tell a story about what my catacombs look like.”

The single received official playlisting from Spotify’s New Music Friday Au/Nz, Local Noise, Coastal Drive, Turn Ups Aus, Blak Australia, Big Ancestor Energy, and Original Storyteller.

Celebrating the release of their debut album The Bliss in late 2024, the band received featured album honours from Aussie tastemaker radio triple J for their debut record all release week, and were recently nominated for an APRA award for ‘most performed blues and roots song’.

Produced by Dave Parkin (Spacey Jane) at Perth’s Blackbird Sound Studio with mastering from Brian Lucey (Post Malone, The Black Keys), ‘Catacombs’ was the third single from the album, after ‘Givin’ It Up’ and ‘Ottoway’ released earlier in 2024. The three singles give a perfect glimpse into the expansive, slick sound found on The Bliss—an album that shows off new stylistic directions for the band, whilst still staying true to the sound South Summit fans have come to love over the years.

Following the announcement of their inclusion on The Great Escape lineup, the band will be heading to the music conference from 14th of May, before playing their first UK headline shows in Cornwall, London (SOLD OUT) and Manchester (SOLD OUT), along with two dates in the Netherlands.

It’s been a big year for the WA 5-piece; performing on triple J’s Like A Version back in October 2024; playing shows all across Australia and beyond, including a support tour with The Cat Empire across Europe and festival appearances at Vivid,  Big Pineapple Festival, Blues At Bridgetown and more; announcing their biggest headline tour for Australia and New Zealand for February 2025; and now the release of their highly anticipated debut album The Bliss.

The album, which was the featured album on triple J all week on release, features 12 tracks of Reggae-infused indie rock that perfectly encapsulates the band’s wide-ranging influences and air-tight song writing abilities.

With The Bliss being South Summit’s first studio record, the impact of this album as being a statement of intent from the group was not lost on the band. From album opener ‘Take Me Down’, to the pop-flecked standout ‘Catacombs’ and decadent moments of pure jamming in ‘Holy Cascade’ and ‘We Are The Lions’, this is an album that is unafraid to level up and take South Summit outside their comfort zone.

The album made an impact immediately, with strong support from radio, press and DSPs alike Down Under. The band have found themselves overwhelmed with gratitude following the response, as all of their hard work finally came to fruition.

“The release of The Bliss is such a milestone for us and it feels like a real pinch me moment,” they say. “We’re so overwhelmed and grateful for all the amazing feedback and support with the success of the album. Definitely feeling the love!”

Perth’s South Summit has rapidly risen as a unique voice in the Australian indie scene. Emerging from the West Coast in 2021, the band quickly captivated audiences with their raw, genre-blending sound. Drawing from rock, reggae, and hip-hop influences, South Summit’s music offers fresh perspectives on life, reflected in their three EPs—Merlin’s (2021), Creatures (2023), and Tales Of The Yeti (2023).

In 2024, they reached a pivotal moment with the release of their debut album, The Bliss. Produced with longtime collaborator Dave Parkin, the album showcases the band’s evolving songwriting and confidence. Tracks like ‘Ottoway’ and ‘Exceptional’ highlight their willingness to experiment, taking inspiration from diverse sources like Outkast.

The Bliss captures the band’s journey, blending intricate lyricism with bold soundscapes. As lead vocalist Zaya Reuben describes, it narrates how far they’ve come, embracing vulnerability and growth. For fans old and new, The Bliss serves as both a culmination of their past work and a bold step into the future. South Summit continues to push the boundaries of Australian music, crafting songs that explore the complexities of the human experience.
